SSL
Digital Certificate
An
SSL Digital Certificate provides assurance to your customers.
Available from a small number of trusted sources called certificate
authorities, such as Verisign and Thawte, you must have one
of these certificates registered for your web site to safely
accept credit cards. Through an arrangement with one of these
certificate authorities, we can offer a 10% discount to our
eCommerce customers.
HTTPS
Protocol
This
is the secure protocol used between your customers' browsers
and your web server to exchange certificate and credit card
information securely. The massive amount of encryption occuring
increases the load on the server and carries a monthly surcharge.
We waive this surcharge for our eCommerce customers.
Dedicated
IP Address
An
IP address is really just a number from 0 to 4,294,967,295
that uniquely identifies each computer on the internet. This
may seem like a large number, but it is actually divided into
smaller groups and there are a LOT of computers on the internet,
so it is now considered a limited resource. For this reason,
shared hosting is typically used where possible. What this
means is that many web sites are hosted on a single IP address.
This is possible because the requests that browser programs
like Internet Explorer send to the servers include the actual
name of the web site they want to reach. The server looks
at that name and routes the request to the right web site.
However,
with the secure HTTPS protocol, the requests are encrypted,
and only the destination site can decrypt them. So, we can't
tell who the request is for until we decrypt it, but we can't
decrypt it until we know who it's for.
The
solution is a dedicated IP address. Your site will be the
only site hosted at that IP address, so we will always know
who the request is for, even before we decrypt it. There is
normally a surcharge on IP addresses to discourage abusive
allocation. We waive this surcharge for our eCommerce customers.
SQL
Database
All
of our hosting plans include the free use of osCommerce,
a powerful catalog and shopping cart system. However, osCommerce
requires the use of an SQL database, often a chargeable item.
Our eCommerce customers get a free SQL database for use with
osCommerce.
Merchant
Account Review
Merchant
accounts, payment processors and transaction gateways allow
you to accept credit cards and even checks over the internet.
It is a complex world that is littered with hidden costs and
minimum fees. We will review your business needs and recommend
a solution that's right for you. It may be 3rd party processing,
like PayPal or 2Checkout, or a full fledged merchant account
and Authorize.net. In most cases you can be accepting credit
cards in a matter of days, and you will know exactly what
it will cost.
